After a long period of art gestation, Melanie Garcia has returned to collage with a pair of scissors and glue. While digital manipulation still holds a dear spot in Melanie’s heart, Untitled Collage I (2013-ongoing) is a series of small scale works that are informed by her work in fashion. Representation of the female body is abstracted and anonymous often placed in a natural setting. Scale and power dynamics are explored, scrutinizing the relationship between the figure, setting, geometry and nature.
Melanie completed her BFA in Film Production at Concordia University, where she spent many of her childhood Saturday mornings making art under the watchful eyes of art education graduate students. It has recently come full circle that Melanie now participates in guest artist workshops on digital/traditional collage in various Montreal high schools. Melanie is eagerly hoping to expand this knowledge and her collage work in the magazine illustration world. When she is not obsessing over pixels or little pieces of paper, she freelances as a wardrobe stylist in film and fashion.
